F ID I SE RV I C E S Introducing the FIDI Ombudsman initiative Transparency, openness, and empowered members are among the hallmarks of a strong industry association such as FIDI. FIDI Secretary General Jesse van Sas reports on the launch of a new project that aims to strengthen the organisation further still: the FIDI Ombudsman W Jesse van Sas, Secretary General of FIDI Global Alliance ith 600 members across more than 100 countries, represented by 26 local or regional FIDI Associations, I wouldnt blame you if you find FIDIs governance complex. As a FIDI Affiliate, it can be confusing to understand how decisions are taken and what your role is, as a member company, in the bigger picture. FIDIs current governance structure allows a balanced, fair approach to deciding the direction and future of our organisation. But we understand it can be difficult to openly challenge or criticise those who have been appointed to represent you which is why we are launching a new initiative: the FIDI Ombudsman. This initiative comes in response to a growing need for an impartial, confidential channel through which grievances and concerns related to FIDIs governance can be expressed and addressed. It aligns with our commitment to continuous improvement and member-centricity. What is the FIDI Ombudsman initiative? The FIDI Ombudsman initiative paves the way for a more transparent operational environment It will provide a confidential communication channel for FIDI members. You can now voice your concerns or complaints about a FIDI representative or any governance-related matter directly and discretely. Heres how it works: l Confidential communication: Any employee of a FIDI-affiliated company can send an email to ombudsman@fidi.org. This will be directly accessible only to the FIDI Secretary General. Note, this email should be used only to address governance-related issues and/or issues relating to the behaviour of FIDI representatives, such as local or regional FIDI Presidents or Board members. What is an ombudsman? The term ombudsman was originally a Swedish word meaning representative of the people. The role of an ombudsman is to hear, investigate and defend the grievances of people against businesses, institutions, government departments, or other public entities. Many countries, organisations (for example, the UN) and large companies have appointed ombudsmen to address governance issues. l Anonymity and respect: The identity of the individual raising the concern will remain strictly confidential, a principle that is fundamental in this process. Even the FIDI Board and staff will not be privy to the identity of the complainant. l Action and accountability: Upon receiving a complaint, the Secretary General will take appropriate steps to address, investigate and resolve the issue, ensuring that our governance structures function in the most transparent and effective manner. Why is this initiative a game-changer? Enhancing transparency: In an industry where trust is paramount, the FIDI Ombudsman initiative paves the way for a more transparent operational environment. It assures members that their voices are heard and that there are clear, confidential avenues for addressing governance-related concerns. Empowering members: This initiative empowers every individual in the FIDI family. It acknowledges that insights and concerns at all levels are vital for the health and integrity of the association. This is a step towards a more inclusive and democratic approach to problem-solving within FIDI. Strengthening governance: By offering a direct line to the Secretary General, FIDI underscores its commitment to strong, accountable governance. Its a move that not only fosters trust, but that also helps to swiftly identify and rectify governancerelated issues. Cultivating a culture of openness: This initiative sends a clear message about the kind of culture FIDI aspires to cultivate one in which openness, honesty and mutual respect are the cornerstones. Looking ahead The FIDI Ombudsman initiative is a reflection of our philosophy of quality and transparency. Feedback and constructive criticism from members are vital; they are the catalysts that drive improvement and innovation. The FIDI Ombudsman initiative is an important step in that direction, ensuring that transparency and fairness remain the foundation of FIDIs governance. l If you have any questions or comments, please contact Jesse van Sas at jesse.vansas@fidi.org 42 FF312 Dec_Feb 23 pp42-43 Ombudsman.indd 42 05/12/2023 12:51
