Hapag-Lloyd has warned customers that surcharges will increase by ‘roughly double’.
The German shipping carrier said the rise would come once the scope of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) charges – designed to cut emissions using a carbon market – widens on January 1, 2025. Carriers currently pay for 40 per cent of their vessel emissions; this is now being raised to 70 per cent.
The extra fees will cover costs of fuel bunkering arising from FuelEU regulations that are aimed at accelerating the uptake of renewable and low-carbon fuels in shipping.
